Did you know that under current regulations ITV, Channel 4 and Five are only permitted to run 7 minutes of ads per hour (averaged over the day), with a maximum of 12 minutes in peak time on ITV 1?

These rules save us from getting bombarded by ads like they do across the pond. However, Ofcom have recently put forward a proposal to increase the amount of advertising UK broadcasters can show. From an agency stand-point this is a double-headed coin. The increased number of minutes for sale may mean that ITV, Channel 4 and Five will need to decrease the media costs to fill the airtime; and if it’s more affordable it means more clients can add TV advertising to the marketing mix.

Satellite and cable channels have slightly different rules and are allowed an average of 9 minutes an hour of ads but many of these stations struggle to fill those minutes and as a consequence it is cheaper to place your TV ads here.

From a viewing stand-point there is a danger that the quality of the adverts will diminish as the current higher media costs have encouraged creativity and investment in the production values - you just need to experience the ‘home-made’ feel of some ads on the more obscure channels.

Broadcasters understand that having increased minutes to sell could be the beginning of the end for the higher media rates on which their businesses have thrived. With some of their core revenue generators such as junk food and alcohol advertising also facing restrictions, they could end up with more time to advertise fewer products. If this happens we could see more poor quality advertising to fill the extra minutes.

Broadcasters are keen to keep the status quo and if the rules are changed, they are likely to be pressurized to increase the amount of ads they show, however unwilling they may be. The big brand advertisers are also keen to keep things as they are as the current limits work in their favour by increasing the cost of advertising and keeping smaller rivals off the screens.

Now ads are often entertaining in their own right (sometimes more than the programmes themselves), and whilst we might all question whether we want more ads, we most certainly want quality. So if you find yourself looking at advertising your company on TV, don’t scrimp on the creative and production costs.

Anyone who understands anything about running a business knows that well placed ads and commercials are important to the bottom line of a company. Consumers also rely on them to get information about products and services. But the question remains, how much is too much? And why isn’t quality the overriding focus?

Tirana is the capital of Albania, but as Albania is a small country its capital is also small and quite an easy place to get around in. Tirana is not Paris or Las Vegas, but it does have a number of charming attractions that will give you a good idea about the history and cultural tradition of this Balkan nation. As Tirana is a capital one of the prominent features of the city are the ministry buildings housing the seats of the various sections of the Albanian government. They have a unique style which has been called “architechtonic” by some. They were built in the 1930’s but they have been kept in good condition and look smart. In the post World War II period several newer buildings were introduced and these include: the Palace of Culture, the Palace of Congresses, the National Historic Museum and the Center of International Culture. In the center of Tirana is the Skanderbeg Square. It is named after Albania’s national hero who fought the Ottoman Turks. In the center of this square is an impressive equestrian statue of Skanderbeg.

Just across the street from the statue is the Mosque of Ethem Bey. It was constructed in 1789 and right next to it is a clock tower that was constructed in 1830. These two buildings are important in getting a feel for the history of Albania, and you can’t miss them once you reach the center of the City.

Also in the main square is another impressive building housing the Museum of National History. On the front of this building is a huge “socialist realist” mosaic with marching workers, peasants and partisans. The mosaic depicts the history of Albania from the Illyrian period to the Second World War. Inside the museum you will find exhibits on the various periods of Albanian history. Although there are English signs, you will get more out of the visit if you go with an Albanian friend.

The Gallery of Art is also near the central square. It was looted during the turmoil of 1997 but it has made a comeback, especially since a former artist, Edi Rama, was elected the mayor of Tirana. It has a beautiful outdoor garden, and inside you will find some temporary exhibits and the permanent exhibition which features the socialist realist art from the communist period.

If you want to go deeper into the Albanian heritage there is an Archaeological Museum which has beautiful jewelry, pottery, arrowheads, animal statuettes and other artifacts from Albania’s long history.

You will be surprised to find that Tirana has its very own pyramid. But it is not an ancient Egyptian monument. Popularly known as the Pyramid it is located on the main boulevard. It was built in 1988 as a museum for Enver Hoxha, the post-war communist dictator. It has since been turned into a night club and cultural center. The children of the city like to use the sloping sides of building as a giant slide, and on summer evenings the outside park and garden is filled with people enjoying a night out.

You will not find mind-boggling sights in Tirana, but it is an enjoyable and friendly place where you will feel comfortable and have a good time.

The Cruise Ship Achille has a background which is steeped in a tragic history that makes people shudder when they think of the incident of brutal hijacking which occured on the high seas over twenty years ago.

The majestic cruise ship Achille which was initially called William Ruys is remembered for the hijacking in 1985. This was a passenger liner and this ship began her maiden voyage in 1947, on December 2. The ship, 192 metres by 25 metres measured 21,450 metric tons. 900 passengers were accommodated on this passenger liner. Equipped with 8 Sulzer engines and 2 propellers, this liner was majestic looking in all aspects.

This ship was sold to Flotta Lauro Line and came to be known as Achille Lauro after the Mayor of Naples. It was rebuilt and a lot of modernization took place. In 1985, October 7, 4 armed terrorists who represented the PLF - Palestine Liberation Front hijacked Achille Lauro, the Italian cruise liner. At that time, hundred very elderly passengers were on the cruise liner. The hijackers had a snarling demand. They wanted Israel to free the prisoners of Palestine and to prove their grit; they killed an American Tourist Leon Klinghoffer 69 year old. The poor old man’s body was flung overboard along with the wheel chair. After two days, the Egyptian government who was unaware that Klinghoffer had been killed provided a safe passage to the hijackers in exchange for the passengers and the ship.

After the murder was discovered, the US Navy Fighters took charge of the Egypt Airliner 737 which was flying the hijackers in order to yield freedom to them in Tunisia, forced the aircraft to land in Sicily. The Italian authorities took charge of the terrorists and convicted them to imprisonment for long time.

The PLO, Palestine Liberation Front was sued for Leon Klinghoffer’s death. After PLO had paid an undisclosed amount to the daughters of Klinghoffer the suit was dropped. The sum was used for funding the Marilyn and Leon Klinghoffer Memorial Foundation. This organization works to fight against the terrorism through education, legal and political endeavors.

The ship continued its service and reflagging happened in 1987. It was then that the Lauro Line became the Star Lauro. In the year 1965, in January, the ship was renamed Achille Lauro after the Lauro Line Managing Director. She was modernized and rebuilt by CN Riuniti di Palermo. There were a lot of significant changes made to the beautiful ship which were the twin funnels and painted blue. There was the Lauro star added. The high funnels were topped by twin funnels, which were topped by smoke dispensers. The promenade deck was made to extend forward with the upper decks were glazed and the hull had been again painted with a blue color. It looked magnificent, and looked much like a very modern liner. In 1994, November, 30 she caught fire off the coast of Somalia. The vessel sank in December 2. With that went a cruise liner, the Cruise Ship Achille which would be known for its historical significance in the years to come.

Despite the city becoming bigger and building its nightlife more for tourists, New York is still packed to the brim with plenty of nightlife for locals and travelers. NYC is known as the HUB of the Jazz world since all the greats made their names here and up and comers know this is the place to make it. New York also has some of the hottest and most exclusive dance clubs in the world. There are a lot of lounges so there are plenty of places in New York for you to find a nice comfy place to sit, drink, and listen to music. NYC caters to all ages of partiers, hosts the broadest range of huge concerts by world renowned musicians, and is world famous for the comedy clubs that the most famous comedians globally call home.

We went on a friday night looking for a nightclub with a cool atmosphere and someone recommended Ace of Clubs Nightclub so we hopped in a cab and $40 later we arrived at Ace of Clubs. When we walked in the door things just didn’t seem our style. It was a little loud and the drinks were kind of pricey. So we went back to our hotel in search of something better.

On the way into the hotel we asked the woman at the desk to recommend a nightclub and she told us to check ploose which I guess is some new nightlife directory that was super easy. We typed in New York City, chose nightclub, and it showed a bunch right on the map. So we picked the closest one that said it had drink specials going on, since we had spent so much on cabs already, we went down and cabbed over to it. When we got there it was EXACTLY like it showed on that ploose site (we had watched a couple video tours so we knew what to expect). We walked in and got a table and bought a bottle of grey goose and had a great time. It was called “The Pink Elephant” (name of the nightclub). We had a great time and went back to our hotel to pass out.

We spent the next day doing touristy stuff, checking out 5th ave, walking all around Manhattan, stopping at a couple restaurants randomly for lunch and by the time night rolled around we were exhausted. We decided we needed something a bit more lowkey so we checked ploose again and found a cool little lounge nearby and decided to check it out. It was called the Sapphire Lounge. It had a really classic decor, kind of like a party in your living room. The red curtains were great! There was this hip DJ there playing some house music and the prices were very reasonable. We highly recommend it.

Sunday came around and we wanted to watch the Football game so we ploosed a nearby sports bar. We found Proof NYC and let me tell you, I was REALLY glad we went there. It had a HUGE TV and Im talking like 8 feet long — this TV was no joke. The bar had hardwood floors and scarlet walls. They had some great beer specials that day as well so we had lucked out. We ordered some food and sipped our drinks enjoying the last day in New York City.

Before we left town for good we had time to stop by a jazz bar called the “Blue Note”. It was one of the best jazz bars Ive been to in the world and to any jazz fans, I recommend it highly. It was at about half or more capacity but not too crowded, decorated beautifully and the featured musicians blew our minds!

In summary, New York City has a VERY wide selection of entertainment selections to offer. Next time we go we will check on the Opera and Broadway and give you our recommendations there.

Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are truly a Caribbean paradise that stretches from Key Largo to Key West. Key Largo is well known divers and snorkelers with clear water it’s the easiest Key to get to. Saint Patrick’s Day, also referred to as Saint Paddy’s Day, commemorates one of the patron saints of Ireland, Saint Patrick.
