York Bridges

October 31, 2008

The walled city of York is known for its rich history and heritage. It has been in existence for almost 2000 years and has been a witness to the most important events in the development of England.

If you are planning to visit this city, there is a long list of interesting sites that you can visit. There are castles, museums, abbeys, gardens, and a lot more. The bridges that connect York are also very fascinating since the city is a confluence of the Ouse River and the Foss.

There are 9 bridges in York. You can trace some bridges that were built during the Roman and olden times. There are also bridges which serve as symbols of linkages in the modern era. Here are some of the most notable bridges of York:

Ouse Bridge

The Ouse Bridge was originally built by the Romans but was replaced during the time of the Vikings in 1154. The wooden bridge built by the Vikings collapsed during a gathering of a big crowd who welcomed St. William of York from his exile.

Ouse Brige was rebuilt with stones but this was crashed by the winter floods of 1565. The bridge was repaired to feature an 81-ft central arch which was compared to the Rialto in Venice. The modern Ouse is a structure completed in 1821 which follows the design of Peter Atkinson the Younger.

Scarborough Railway Bridge

This was the second bridge built across the River Ouse. It was completed in 1845 to support the railway transporting locals between York and Scarborough. The pedestrian lane was originally in the middle of the tracks until it was moved to the south side in 1875 when the track was raised 4 feet.

Lendal Bridge

The Lendal Bridge connects the York Railway Station to the York Minster. It was built in 1863 to replace the rope ferry service crossing the river. The bridge is adorned with Gothic features and designed with towers at both ends namely the Barker Tower and the Lendal Tower.

Skeldergate Bridge

The Skeldergate served during the 19th century. The bridge which connects the York Castle area and the Baile Hill can be raised to let the ships pass across the Ouse.

Millennium Bridge

This £4.2 million bridge was built to enhance the lifestyle of the community. Aside from connecting Fulford to the Butcher Terrace, the structure has walking paths, bicycle lanes, and a shelf which acts as a meeting place of people. The Millennium was opened in April 10, 2001 and has shortened the walk for students who previously had to traverse Skeldergate Bridge to get to the University of York.

Naburn Railway Bridge

The Naburn Bridge used to support the York-Selby railway until it was moved in the mid 1980’s. It is also known as the Fisherman Bridge because of the mammoth metal sculpture of a fisherman resting on top. The sculpture is a contribution of the York program for Creative Communities.

Clifton Bridge

The first Clifton Bridge was designed to accommodate the extra traffic during the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Kent held at the York Minster. In 1963, the bridge was made permanent using around 4000 tons of concrete and tons of steel.

Traverse through these bridges, and somehow have a glimpse of the history of York full of its local color and tradition.

Subic is a town that belongs to the Zambales province. This is the place that was home to many American Fleets because of the American navy base that was established there years ago. Angeles City - The Bustling Entertainment Center of the Philippines

October 31, 2008

Anyone visiting Angeles City today can easily testify to the economic boom taking place. But what makes the situation more admirable is that throughout its history the city has managed to overcome all the obstacles that have come in its way.

During World War II, Angeles, then just a town, was occupied by the Japanese, and the citizens, including American and Filipino soldiers, suffered terribly. The destruction of Fort Stotsenburg was one of the most devastating in history. However, after three years, the Allied Forces were able to liberate Angeles. Fort Stotsenberg was greatly enlarged, and became Clark Air Base. This resulted in the rapid expansion of business in Angeles and it eventually became a city.

Just as it was experiencing growth however, Mt. Pinatubo erupted in 1991, causing havoc and destruction. In the same year, the Laurel-Langely Act, which allowed for the establishment of American bases in the Philippines, was denied extension by the Senate.

Despite the setback, Angeles City was able to recover. In a mere two years, Clark air Base became Clark Freeport Zone. Today it is the center of numerous upstart business, mostly involved in the fields of science and technology. The Angeles livelihood Village and Industrial Estate have spawned a robust export industry, with products ranging from local crafts to garments.

A haven for businessmen, Angeles City’s storied past also makes it an ideal tourist destination. Among the numerous landmarks that should be checked out include the Pamintuan Residence, which was the home of the First Philippine Republic. Later becoming the base of General Arthur MacArthur, it is now the site of the Central Luzon central bank.

The historic Fort Stotsenburg has also become a tourist spot; the Founders’ Residence constructed by Angel de Miranda in the 1820s is situated in Santo Rosario and provides a glimpse of the city’s past; also in Santo Rosario is the Holy Rosary Church. Constructed in 1877 through forced labor, the edifice also served as a medical facility during the late 1800s.

The Bayanihan Park is a fusion of an amusement center and historical site. Here one can see areas designated for playing sports, and at the same time it is the place where you will find the famous Salakot Arch.

Other spectacles in Angeles City are its festivals. One of the most eagerly awaited is the Philippine Hot Air Balloon Fiesta where participants from across the globe join in; another popular event is the Sisig Festival, which is a commemoration of the Sisig, renowned dish of Pampanga. The La Naval Fiesta is religious in nature, and began as a thanks for the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom the people credited for helping the Spanish defeat the Dutch.

Angeles City also boasts some of the best schools and universities in the country. Educational institutions like AMA Computer College, STI, University of the Philippines, OB Montessori and the Asian Institute of College Studies, are found throughout the city.

Angeles is also the location of several charity groups and organizations, including the Bahay Bata Center, and the legal Bureau for Women, catering to the needs of women and children.

Good Nutrition Equals Healthy and Better Life

October 31, 2008

The complete physiological process by which the human body or any organism obtains the food that is necessary for its development and growth is defined as nutrition. Eating food is not sufficient as it has to be broken down and turned into energy for any organism to carry on. This is more like a general definition of nutrition for the animal kingdom.

The Human Definition

Nutrition, for humans, is an important process since it is aimed at the reconstruction of tissues with the aid of food and other supplies. The origin of the word nutrition is from the Latin world nutritio or French word nutrition—both meaning sustenance. Without this so-called sustenance, no human being will be able to go on living and he would cease to grow. As a human being is continuously deprived of food, he would soon weaken and eventually die.

Correct or proper nutrition is more than just being physically fit. There are more aspects to proper nutrition such as having a very optimistic view on one’s life and have a healthy and spiritual mind. This justifies the saying—a healthy mind in a healthy body.

A body that is not happy would lead into a mind that is not able to think clearly. As stress sinks in, it would finally create a twisted view of one’s self and how you view life in general. Nutrition is what fuels all the mechanisms in your body and when this is neglected, dire consequences are sure to follow.

Nowadays, where stressful living is quite common, it is more important to live a balanced life and get rid of the foods that can do damage to your body. Replacing junk food with healthy food would be one of the most important decisions that you have to make in your entire life.

Promoting Proper Nutrition

ADA or The American Dietetic Association is the nation’s biggest organization of nutrition experts and professionals. This group has about 65,000 members and they all aim at promoting healthy nutrition. These experts give advice to people who want to have a go at changing their lifestyles for the better. All members of the ADA are food and nutrition specialists and they put all the theories that they have learned into practical solutions.

The appearance of junk food in the market for the last few decades has proven to be an almost insurmountable task for nutrition experts. Incorrect nutrition (which is unfortunately more common among modern men) always comes with an unbalanced life.

America, together with the rest of the world, continues to battle obesity. Modern man is now used to being sedentary and this lack of movement makes large deposits of unused fats as well as calories into the body. Fat affects all human internal organs and would eventually cause health issues such as problems on blood circulation, heart failure, hard breathing and even cancer.

Looking at it, the solution is quite simple—have a healthy diet by eating fruits, vegetables, drinking lots of water, doing some forms of exercise, as well as keeping a healthy disposition in life is all it takes. Oh, if only mankind would follow these few, simple ways of life!
